Laurence Sax

MANAGING DIRECTOR

Laurence Sax, managing director, has 30 years of experience in turnaround and restructuring, crisis management, strategic planning, optimizing capital structures, streamlining operations, managing severe liquidity, consensual out-of-court recapitalizations, bankruptcy, and liquidations. Larry’s sector expertise includes retail, consumer products, agriculture, and manufacturing, and he has held numerous interim C-level roles.

Previously, Larry was Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Gordon Brothers, a multinational retail advisory firm, where he led the firm’s Finance and Accounting, Treasury, Financial Planning, Corporate Development (M&A), and Information Technology departments. Prior to that he was a turnaround and restructuring professional for 12 years at Alvarez & Marsal. Representative consulting engagements include:

  • Restructured a 6th generation family-owned vineyard and winery in Sonoma California. Managed restricted cash flow, reduced operating costs, worked with the secured lenders and other constituents, developed an achievable 2023 business plan, and recapitalized the business.
  • Interim CFO, CRO, and Treasurer at Totes Isotoner, a wholesaler and online merchant of umbrellas, slippers, gloves, and accessories with global operations. Led the Finance, Accounting, Treasury, and FP&A departments through a severe liquidity crisis and $400M out-of-court consensual restructuring, avoiding bankruptcy.
  • Interim CRO and CFO for Derek Lam International, a luxury women’s fashion designer, wholesaler, and retailer. Restructured and recapitalized the business to dissolve a joint venture with the company’s equity sponsor, managed a liquidity crisis, prepared cash flow analyses, and pro forma business plans. Retrained the Finance department, restructured the NYC office and retail real estate obligations.
  • Interim CFO for Z Wireless, a 250-store chain of Verizon Wireless authorized stores. Managed the Finance, Accounting, Store Fulfillment, Merchandising, HR, and IT departments. Led the implementation of IT infrastructure initiatives and restructured buying and store fulfillment to optimize gross margins, product mix, and inventory.

Larry is a Certified Turnaround Professional (CTP) and holds a B.S. in Industrial Engineering and an M.S. in Manufacturing Systems Engineering, both from Lehigh University.
